Are You Afraid to Identify as a Leader?

When it comes to leading, self-identity matters. Research has shown that seeing yourself as a leader is an important first step on the path toward becoming one — and reluctance to identify as a leader can keep capable people from taking on leadership responsibilities. So, why are people so often uncomfortable with thinking of themselves as leaders?

While there are no doubt many factors at play, prior research has shown that reputational concerns can play a major role in deterring people from proactively pursuing their goals at work. As such, we were interested in whether perceived risk to people’s reputations could similarly impact their sense of identity as leaders, and in turn make them less likely to lead. To explore this question, we conducted a series of studies with more than 1,700 participants including full-time employees, MBA students, and U.S. Airforce cadets, and we consistently found that the more people worried about the reputational risks of being a leader, the less likely they were to identify as one.

Specifically, we identified three common reputational fears that hold people back from seeing themselves as leaders:

Fear of seeming domineering

Many of the participants in our study expressed concern about being seen as bossy, autocratic, or domineering if they were to take on a leadership role. As one respondent put it, “I wouldn’t want to seem pushy, or that I take advantage of weak [people]. I wouldn’t want to seem cold.” Interestingly, while much has been written on the use of pejorative words like “bossy” to describe female leaders, we found that in our studies, men and women were both afraid of coming across in this manner.

Fear of seeming different

The second common concern was that acting as a leader would result in being singled out and receiving too much attention for being different from others — even if that attention was positive. One participant explained, “I don’t want to be looked up to or idolized. I am comfortable leading, but at the same time I want to be on the same level as everyone else.” Many people worry that if they become leaders, they will have to sacrifice their sense of belonging within the group.

Fear of seeming unqualified

Regardless of whether they actually saw themselves as qualified, many of our participants said that they were afraid that others would view them as unfit for leadership. As one shared, “I know people often associate men with leadership roles, so that makes me somewhat uncomfortable. I worry that if I try to pursue leadership in my field, people will not take me seriously.”

To be sure, there are very real experiences that often inform these fears, especially for underrepresented groups such as women and people of color. But whether these fears are justified or not, it’s important to understand their impact on how we view ourselves. And across our studies, we found that people who reported higher levels of fear around these reputational risks were less likely to see themselves as leaders. As a result, they were less likely to act as leaders, and therefore less likely to be seen as leaders by their supervisors.

At first glance, this may seem counterintuitive. Why would perceptions of riskiness influence something as deeply ingrained as your identity? From a psychological standpoint, however, this effect is not surprising at all. No one likes to think of themselves as driven by fear, and leadership can often come with substantial challenges. So, when pursuing leadership feels risky, people subconsciously redefine their own identities to justify avoiding it. It’s a lot more comfortable to rationalize an unwillingness to lead by telling yourself that you’re “just not a leader” than to admit that you’re afraid of what others might think.

The good news is, our research also revealed several psychological interventions managers can use to reduce both the potency and impact of these fears, enabling them to encourage more people to identify as and become leaders. First, our research suggests that it is possible to influence people’s perceptions of reputational risk. In one study, we found that participants who listened to a podcast in which we framed leadership as risky were less likely to identify or act as leaders than those who listened to a podcast that described leadership as low-risk. This suggests that simply by presenting leadership as less risky and lower-stakes (for example, by clarifying that leadership mistakes are expected and will not be a black mark on an employee’s record), managers can help employees feel more comfortable seeing themselves as leaders.

In addition, managers can also take steps to explicitly address employees’ reputational concerns. It is understandable that people wouldn’t want to align themselves with an identity that’s stereotypically associated with being domineering, different, or unqualified. Organizations must demonstrate through both words and actions that anyone can be a leader, and that taking on leadership roles will be viewed positively.

Of course, no intervention will be able to eliminate reputational fears completely. But a survey of MBA consulting teams helped us identify a strategy that managers can use to limit these fears’ negative impact: We found that when students viewed leadership as an innate ability, perceiving greater reputational risk reduced their self-identity as a leader — but for students who viewed leadership as a skill that could be cultivated, the effect was substantially muted. This is likely because people who view leadership as a learnable skill may feel more comfortable with setbacks, whereas those with a fixed view may assume that any mistakes they make as leaders permanently damage their reputation and indicate that they simply aren’t meant to lead. As such, managers can reduce the impact of reputational concerns on identity by explicitly challenging the idea that leaders are “born not made.” That means providing employees with guidance and opportunities to develop their leadership skills, recognizing their progress in developing these skills (even when the outcome isn’t totally positive), and openly sharing stories of leadership failures along with successes.

As author, educator, and activist Parker Palmer compellingly writes, “Leadership is a concept we often resist. It seems immodest, even self-aggrandizing, to think of ourselves as leaders. But if it is true that we are made for community, then leadership is everyone’s vocation, and it can be an evasion to insist that it is not. When we live in the close-knit ecosystem called community, everyone follows and everyone leads.” Establishing a culture that celebrates leadership and makes it truly accessible, regardless of gender, race, age, or other identity, can help everyone feel more comfortable seeing themselves as — and acting as — a leader.

Many of these cards are intense, challenging, or difficult to process, forcing us to examine our mindsets or step back from something we want. And yet, when we look more closely at this suit, we can find real clarity and power within these cards, opportunities to more authentically understand the world around us as well as the ideas and instincts that dwell within us.

Keep an open mind, and you may find that this becomes one of your favorite suits instead of one that you dread working with.

Swords Basics

The suit of swords is one of four suits in the Minor Arcana and includes numbered cards that go from ace to ten and four court cards. These cards are connected to the astrological element of Air, meaning that this suit is also linked to the three Air zodiac signs: Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius.

Each of the four minor arcana suits is associated with an aspect of our humanity.

Swords represent the mind, while cups represent the heart, pentacles represent the body, and wands represent the soul. Swords help us understand how we receive, process, and use information and how we solve problems and interact with the world around us.

In addition to Air and the mind, the suit of swords also represents truth, clarity, knowledge, communication, collaboration, expansion, and logical thinking.

When working with cards in the suit of swords, it’s important to remember that these cards often ask us to consider where we are coming from and how we are thinking through a situation or challenge:

What biases are we bringing to our analysis?
What mental traps are we stuck in?
How can we expand our understanding of something and open ourselves up to new truths?

The pips (or numbered cards) in the suit of swords show us several ways that we can think about this energy, from protecting our minds with rest to moving away from harmful ideas, understanding where we are feeding our own anxieties, or coming to terms with ways that we may be blocking our own progress.

On the other hand, the court cards represent individuals who are learning how to best utilize the energy of the swords. The page is a child and student, someone who is just beginning their journey with curiosity and interest; the knight is an adolescent, eager to prove their talent and skill with actions; the queen is a master and ruler who teaches others how to use this element internally, and the king is a master and ruler who teaches others how to use this element externally.

These cards can represent the querent, a person in the querent’s life, or can offer advice on how to harness the energy of the suit of swords for themselves.

4 of Swords: A call to rest, setting up mental boundaries, protecting the mind. Stepping back from movement or building to prioritize personal healing. Recovery, restoration, reflection.

5 of Swords: Unnecessary conflict, fighting for the sake of fighting, restless frustration. A determination to win a battle without remembering the larger goal. Overlooking the consequences of our actions and the ways that we may be harming others.

6 of Swords

6 of Swords: Moving on, leaving a bad situation behind, making the best of things. Traveling, escaping, a fresh start down a new path. Leaving our troubles behind. Finding freedom and purpose after a difficult period.

10 of Swords: A victim mindset. Rock bottom. A desire to give up, an unwillingness to view a situation from any perspective other than your own. Being consumed by anger, fear, or sorrow. Nowhere to go but up.

Working With the Suit of Swords

It might feel overwhelming to work with the suit of swords, given that the themes and issues that they can bring up in readings are very real and very serious. But the mind is an important piece of who we are. These cards give us the space to recognize where we may be limiting our imagination, viewing things through too narrow a lens, or getting ourselves tangled up in an illogical worry.

Six Family Types And Their Unique Dynamics

Different family types are not only common but also much more accepted than they were in the past. To define family types, we categorize families based on their structure and dynamics, such as single-parent households, nuclear families, and extended families. It’s not uncommon to be raised by a single mother or be part of a mixed family. Each family type (there are six main ones that people agree on) has a unique family dynamic.

Learning about your family type and thinking about how it affects your family dynamic can help bring you clarity about your family challenges or give you insight into the process of going through a big shift in your family structure. Looking at family type and dynamics can also give you a better idea of the strengths and weaknesses that your family is likely working with.

Some people may also choose to begin parenting classes or online therapy to deepen their understanding of family dynamics.

Six different family types and their unique family dynamics

Though the exact definition of a family depends largely on individual interpretations and cultural norms, there are some sources that define at least six unique family types that follow their own set of dynamics and structures.

1. Nuclear family

Nuclear families, also known as elementary or traditional families, consist of two parents (usually married or common law) and their children. Nuclear families typically have one or more children; they may be biological or adopted, but the main idea is that the parents are raising their kids together in the family home.

Though nuclear families seem to be on the decline, a 2016 U.S. Census study shows that 69% of children still live in nuclear families. This is the most commonly depicted and explored family type.

Nuclear families can be strong and successful, with both parents being great examples for their kids. These kids often have many advantages over other families with less, which can help them get ahead in life. However, like any family, nuclear families have their struggles to face. For example, if parents shut out grandparents and other extended family, chances are their support system will not be strong and getting through hard times can be challenging.

2. Single parent

Single-parent families consist of one parent with one or more kids. In these cases, the parent either never married, widowed, or divorced. A paper by Ellwood, D.T., and Jencks, C. (2004) talks about how single-parent families have been on the rise since the 1960s when divorce rates started going up (and so did births happening out of wedlock). They suggest that these changes could be due to many different factors, from leaving behind outdated gender roles to feeling comfortable being independent and achieving the goal of raising a child, regardless of the presence of a spouse or not.

Someone who is single parenting and raising kids alone is not that uncommon anymore, and like any other family type, single-parent homes have their pros and cons. Being a single parent raising kids can be hard. It can also be hard being a kid when your parents are split up or if you grew up only knowing one parent. In this situation, families need to make the best of what they have and rely on each other for love and support.

3. Extended family

While most people in the U.S. would identify nuclear families as being the “traditional” family type, in different cultures, extended families are much more common and have been around for hundreds of years. Extended families are families with two or more adults who are related through blood or marriage, usually along with children. This often includes aunts, uncles, cousins, or other relatives living under the same roof.

Typically, extended families live together for social support and to achieve common goals. For example, parents may live with their children and their children’s grandparents. This gives the family the ability to provide care for their elderly, and in turn, the grandparents may be able to help with childcare while the parents are at work.

In North America, extended families living together isn’t that common, but it does happen occasionally. What’s nice about extended families is how close they can be and how they give each other a lot of support. That doesn’t mean that so much family living together is always easy, though. There can be differences in opinion in extended families, and some people might live this way because they are obligated, not because they want to.

4. Childless family

Childless families are families with two partners who cannot have or don’t want kids. In the world of family types and dynamics, these families are often forgotten or left out (even though you can still have a family without children). In the past, growing up, getting married, and having children was the norm, but in today’s world, more people are choosing to postpone having children or deciding not to have any.

These unique families include working couples who may have pets or enjoy taking on other people’s kids (like nieces and nephews) for the day occasionally rather than having their own. They could also be adventurous couples who don’t feel like kids would be a good fit for their lifestyle. These relationships can be between wife and husband, husband and husband, wife and wife, or partner and partner.

The decision of whether to have kids is a difficult and highly personal one. Having kids isn’t for everyone, and some families do great without them. Still, it’s important to remember that some childless families are not childless because they want to be. 5. Stepfamily

A stepfamily is when two separate families merge into one. This can go several different ways, like two divorced parents with one or more children blending families, or one divorced parent with kids marrying someone who has never been married and has no kids.

Like single-parent families, step-families have become more common over the years. Like all these different family types, stepfamilies also have a unique set of strengths and weaknesses that they need to deal with.

Going from a nuclear or single-parent family to a stepfamily can be a tough transition. It can be hard letting new people into your family dynamic, especially welcoming in a whole other family. Over time though, some children will come to accept their stepparents and step-siblings as part of the family and form strong bonds. This often also requires co-parenting of adoptive kids and can increase the number of people each partner has to look after or care for in the family unit.

Co-parenting is somewhat different from parallel parenting. Even if both procedures allow both parents to be in charge of custody and parental obligations, co-parenting entails cooperation, plenty of communication, and a collaborative approach to parenting, compared to parallel parenting wherein there’s limited direct contact with each other. Step-grand-parents might also be involved in this dynamic, as there are many variations and a wide spread of how far a stepfamily can go.

6. Grandparent family

The final family type is the grandparent family. A grandparent family is when one or more grandparent is raising their grandchild or grandchildren. While uncommon, according to the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, grandparent-headed families are on the rise. They that, “Census study indicate that in the United States approximately 2.4 million grandparents are raising 4.5 million children.”

This situation happens when the parents aren’t around to take care of their kids or are incapable of properly taking care of their kids. For example, the parents might be incarcerated, too young to provide, may have a substance use disorder, or possibly due to the parent’s death. Thankfully, in these situations, the grandparents step up and act as parents to their grandchildren. This family unit can happen regardless of being wealthy, poor, or middle-class.

What is a nuclear family?

What is a nuclear family? The definition of a nuclear family consists of a mother, father, and the children that they have together. Here in the United States, the nuclear family has diminished. It only consists of a single mother or father raising their children. According to the United States Department of Vital Statistics, in the year 2013, there are over 70% of adults raising their own children all by themselves. This is a very serious problem!! This is simply because the majority of these single parents are women. There are over 60% of single women who are raising their own children. This is simply because of the fact that; the father is absent from the home. This is due to incarceration or death. In most cases, there are over 40% of single women who have children by different fathers. This means that the child was born out of wedlock.

I am speaking about this now because this is a very serious problem in this country. There are men and women who are having children by different people every single day. The expectations change because of the fact that a man or woman usually renege on their promises. In my case, I have not seen my own biological father in over 43 years. This is his fault because he did not tell my mother at the time that he was married to another woman. This is very painful because out of my mother’s 9 children, I am the only one who has a different father from the rest of my half siblings. Anytime that another person tells a person who is in this situation to “get over it.” It only causes a lot of damage to the person’s psyche. It affects them to the point that; a person who is experiencing this usually goes through a great deal of depression. This is simply because a person would like to see their absent parent before they die.

As far as the nuclear family is concerned, there are times when a person would choose not to have any children. This is simply because of financial hardships as well as other forms of hardships that tend to adversely affect the person who is going through this experience. This is not very easy to deal with because most parents, who are living right now, usually refuse to talk about their experiences as well as the past. Children who are growing up in the year 2013 are having a great deal of hardship and pain. The pain comes from not having a father or their own biological father in their life. There are children today who are involved in blended families a whole lot more than ever before. During the time that I grew up, I had my grandparents who raised me when my own mother was not able to. I relied on extended family, which composed of my grandmothers, aunt, uncle, as well as cousins. This is exactly what is really going on right now. A child has to spend most of his time with other relatives instead of his or her own siblings.

The nuclear family will not exist within the next 10 to 20 years. The reason why is because women are taking care of their own children all by themselves. Furthermore, they are also refusing to have additional children for personal reasons. I really think there is a great deal of resentment out there because of the fact that a man refuse to take care of his responsibilities. This also applies to women as well. There are women who are heavily dependent on street drugs. This causes the courts to get involved and physically remove the children from the home. There are crimes such as domestic violence, which has gone up 500% within the past 10 years. This is simply because women or men are engaging in this crime.

This particular crime disrupts the home and it also has an adverse affect on the family. When it comes to the nuclear family, it is time for both men and women to step up to the plate and take care of their own children. It is time for men and women to step up to the plate and address the issues of each child that is inside of the home. There are times when men and women refuse to attend parent child school related conferences. There are a lot of bad choices being made by both parents; especially when it comes to dealing with the family. This is not a very easy topic to address to neither the public nor the family as a whole. Jesus Christ really needs to come down from heaven and address issues such as the nuclear family. Is It True That All Debts Are Supposed To Be Cancelled After Seven Years?

Praise The Lord Saints!! Praise The Lord!! How are you doing today? Fine, I hope. I want to ask a very important question. Is it true that all debts are supposed to be cancelled after seven years? I am asking this question because I have a student loan from the University of North Caroline at Charlotte. The total of my debt right now is $13,330 dollars. I would like for everyone to please pray for me because the interest is compounded daily.

Next, I want to say that I was enrolled in classes on August 21, 2003. I ended up borrowing $3,500 dollars just to enroll for a semester of classes. However, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte withdrew me after six weeks during the Fall Semester simply because I did not have my required vaccination shots. Even though I enjoyed the classes that I have taken, but I could not attend classes for the rest of the Fall Semester.

Also, I went to my doctor at Americare Healthcare Clinic, which is located in Charlotte, NC for a DNA Tracking Test. The test results revealed to me that I have had all of my required vaccinations. Dr. Fidelis Edosowan told me that I have had all of my shots. I thought about enrolling into Graduate School here in Dayton, Ohio at Wright State University.

Moreover, the Financial Aid Advisor stated that I was not able to enroll in any classes because my student loans are currently in default. I did not expect to pay $13,330 dollars in student loan debts 17 years later. I am really hurt because all of my other debts got cancelled after 10 years. I know that I also have to pay a legal judgment of $1,115 dollars to the Mecklenburg County Court System in order to receive another apartment in the Charlotte, NC Area again.

In Addition, according to a Paralegal with the Lexington Law Firm, I really do not have any-more negative items on my current credit files. It is that, I still want to know why my student loan debt did not get cancelled after seven- years. Obviously, this debt has been bothering me for almost 20 years not. The company that has my student loan debt in Collections is William and Fudge Collection Agency in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

This company stated that I have to pay over $300.00 dollars per month. Even though I am on a fixed income right now because I receive Social Security Disability of a total of $959.00 month. I have informed an agent at William and Fudge that I can only pay $50.00 per month. I really do not know exactly what they are going to do, but, I have to pray that I do not end up in jail by the end of this year.

Finally, I want to inform all of you that in the New Testament, Romans 13:8 says: Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another. I really love this Bible verse because love is what we all need in order to survive with Jesus Christ. I know that my credit has varied from time to time. The debts that I have accumulated over the years are my fault. I have received things on credit without paying for them. Therefore, I am a welsher. I really cannot understand how my credit score is 665. I really do not see it. I still have debts to pay. I do not understand why my student loan debt did not get cancelled? I have to do something just to pay this loan off hopefully by the end of this year.
