Many of these cards are intense, challenging, or difficult to process, forcing us to examine our mindsets or step back from something we want. And yet, when we look more closely at this suit, we can find real clarity and power within these cards, opportunities to more authentically understand the world around us as well as the ideas and instincts that dwell within us.

Keep an open mind, and you may find that this becomes one of your favorite suits instead of one that you dread working with.

Swords Basics

The suit of swords is one of four suits in the Minor Arcana and includes numbered cards that go from ace to ten and four court cards. These cards are connected to the astrological element of Air, meaning that this suit is also linked to the three Air zodiac signs: Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius.

Each of the four minor arcana suits is associated with an aspect of our humanity.

Swords represent the mind, while cups represent the heart, pentacles represent the body, and wands represent the soul. Swords help us understand how we receive, process, and use information and how we solve problems and interact with the world around us.

In addition to Air and the mind, the suit of swords also represents truth, clarity, knowledge, communication, collaboration, expansion, and logical thinking.

Just like the astrological element of Air, it’s here that we explore intelligence and facts, rationality, quick movement, collective action, curiosity, innovation, and practical solutions. When working with cards in the suit of swords, it’s important to remember that these cards often ask us to consider where we are coming from and how we are thinking through a situation or challenge:

• What biases are we bringing to our analysis?
• What mental traps are we stuck in?
• How can we expand our understanding of something and open ourselves up to new truths?

The pips (or numbered cards) in the suit of swords show us several ways that we can think about this energy, from protecting our minds with rest to moving away from harmful ideas, understanding where we are feeding our own anxieties, or coming to terms with ways that we may be blocking our own progress.

On the other hand, the court cards represent individuals who are learning how to best utilize the energy of the swords. The page is a child and student, someone who is just beginning their journey with curiosity and interest; the knight is an adolescent, eager to prove their talent and skill with actions; the queen is a master and ruler who teaches others how to use this element internally, and the king is a master and ruler who teaches others how to use this element externally.

These cards can represent the querent, a person in the querent’s life, or can offer advice on how to harness the energy of the suit of swords for themselves.

Below, I offer some simple interpretations of each of the fourteen cards in the suit of swords. You can combine these with your own research or intuitive ideas to develop a personal, powerful understanding of each of these cards, but this will give you a place to begin.

Ace of Swords: A new realization or insight, a big idea, a truth that shifts your perspective in a way that cannot be undone. A racing mind, a new intellectual journey, mental clarity. The full potential of Air, the mind, and the suit of swords.

2 of Swords:A mental block or important decision, a crossroads, a choice that must be made. Feeling stuck or uncertain, inactivity, blocked vision—a call to action.

3 of Swords: A truth that catches us off guard, a shift in our understanding around a relationship, situation, or challenge that may cause us pain or frustration. Harsh words, hurt feelings, and paranoia being confirmed.

4 of Swords

4 of Swords: A call to rest, setting up mental boundaries, protecting the mind. Stepping back from movement or building to prioritize personal healing. Recovery, restoration, reflection.

5 of Swords

5 of Swords: Unnecessary conflict, fighting for the sake of fighting, restless frustration. A determination to win a battle without remembering the larger goal. Overlooking the consequences of our actions and the ways that we may be harming others.

6 of Swords

6 of Swords: Moving on, leaving a bad situation behind, making the best of things. Traveling, escaping, a fresh start down a new path. Leaving our troubles behind. Finding freedom and purpose after a difficult period.

9 of Swords: The darkest parts of the mind. Terror, insomnia, nightmares, anxiety, fears of the unknown. Letting our worries consume us. A need to take action or ask for help. Letting untruths or skewed perspectives spiral out of control.

10 of Swords

10 of Swords: A victim mindset. Rock bottom. A desire to give up, an unwillingness to view a situation from any perspective other than your own. Being consumed by anger, fear, or sorrow. Nowhere to go but up.

Page of Swords: A child of Air with a beginner’s mind, intellectual curiosity, and playful eagerness. An energetic explorer of ideas and theories. Youth, courage, and ability to think outside the box and challenge existing structures.

Knight of Swords

Knight of Swords: An adolescent of Air with strong convictions, brilliant insights, and a desire to prove their value and intelligence. Focused, obsessive, analytical, devoted to logic, sometimes at the expense of other things. Seeking balance. Rapid movement, confidence, determination.

Queen of Swords

Queen of Swords: A ruler of Air with the ability to cut through the confusion, prioritize truth, and set necessary boundaries. Insightful and clever, wise and witty. Discernment, honesty, trusting the courage of one’s convictions. Personal wisdom, not hiding from reality, intensely observant.

King of Swords

King of Swords: A ruler of Air with keen judgment and fair decision-making abilities. Hardworking problem-solver, calculating, intentionally detached. Values intelligence and logic over all else. Able to see all sides of a situation. Stands firm in their own authority.

Working With the Suit of Swords

It might feel overwhelming to work with the suit of swords, given that the themes and issues that they can bring up in readings are very real and very serious. But the mind is an important piece of who we are. These cards give us the space to recognize where we may be limiting our imagination, viewing things through too narrow a lens, or getting ourselves tangled up in an illogical worry.

Spend some time studying these cards, and consider how they can provide insights and encouragement rather than simply inspiring fear.

Six Family Types And Their Unique Dynamics

Different family types are not only common but also much more accepted than they were in the past. To define family types, we categorize families based on their structure and dynamics, such as single-parent households, nuclear families, and extended families. It’s not uncommon to be raised by a single mother or be part of a mixed family. Each family type (there are six main ones that people agree on) has a unique family dynamic. 

Learning about your family type and thinking about how it affects your family dynamic can help bring you clarity about your family challenges or give you insight into the process of going through a big shift in your family structure. Looking at family type and dynamics can also give you a better idea of the strengths and weaknesses that your family is likely working with. 

Some people may also choose to begin parenting classes or online therapy to deepen their understanding of family dynamics.

Six different family types and their unique family dynamics

Though the exact definition of a family depends largely on individual interpretations and cultural norms, there are some sources that define at least six unique family types that follow their own set of dynamics and structures.

1. Nuclear family

Nuclear families, also known as elementary or traditional families, consist of two parents (usually married or common law) and their children. Nuclear families typically have one or more children; they may be biological or adopted, but the main idea is that the parents are raising their kids together in the family home.

Though nuclear families seem to be on the decline, a 2016 U.S. Census study shows that 69% of children still live in nuclear families. This is the most commonly depicted and explored family type.

Nuclear families can be strong and successful, with both parents being great examples for their kids. These kids often have many advantages over other families with less, which can help them get ahead in life. However, like any family, nuclear families have their struggles to face. For example, if parents shut out grandparents and other extended family, chances are their support system will not be strong and getting through hard times can be challenging.

Strengths of nuclear families

• Financially stable, both parents usually work now
• Children raised in a stable parenting situation
• Consistency
• Emphasis on health and education
• Focus on communication

Weaknesses of nuclear families

• Exclusion of extended family can lead to isolation and stress
• Can struggle with conflict resolution
• Nuclear families can become too child-focused, resulting in self-centered children and families neglecting other important things

2. Single parent

Single-parent families consist of one parent with one or more kids. In these cases, the parent either never married, widowed, or divorced. A paper by Ellwood, D.T., and Jencks, C. (2004) talks about how single-parent families have been on the rise since the 1960s when divorce rates started going up (and so did births happening out of wedlock). They suggest that these changes could be due to many different factors, from leaving behind outdated gender roles to feeling comfortable being independent and achieving the goal of raising a child, regardless of the presence of a spouse or not.

Someone who is single parenting and raising kids alone is not that uncommon anymore, and like any other family type, single-parent homes have their pros and cons. Being a single parent raising kids can be hard. It can also be hard being a kid when your parents are split up or if you grew up only knowing one parent. In this situation, families need to make the best of what they have and rely on each other for love and support.

• Family can become very close
• Learn to household duties
• Children and parents can become very resilient

Weaknesses of single-parent families

• Families may have difficulty getting by on one income
• It can be difficult for single parents to work full-time and still afford quality childcare

3. Extended family

While most people in the U.S. would identify nuclear families as being the “traditional” family type, in different cultures, extended families are much more common and have been around for hundreds of years. Extended families are families with two or more adults who are related through blood or marriage, usually along with children. This often includes aunts, uncles, cousins, or other relatives living under the same roof.

Typically, extended families live together for social support and to achieve common goals. For example, parents may live with their children and their children’s grandparents. This gives the family the ability to provide care for their elderly, and in turn, the grandparents may be able to help with childcare while the parents are at work.

In North America, extended families living together isn’t that common, but it does happen occasionally. What is a nuclear family? The definition of a nuclear family consists of a mother, father, and the children that they have together. Here in the United States, the nuclear family has diminished. It only consists of a single mother or father raising their children. According to the United States Department of Vital Statistics, in the year 2013, there are over 70% of adults raising their own children all by themselves. This is a very serious problem!! This is simply because the majority of these single parents are women. There are over 60% of single women who are raising their own children. This is simply because of the fact that; the father is absent from the home. This is due to incarceration or death. In most cases, there are over 40% of single women who have children by different fathers. This means that the child was born out of wedlock.

I am speaking about this now because this is a very serious problem in this country. There are men and women who are having children by different people every single day. The expectations change because of the fact that a man or woman usually renege on their promises. In my case, I have not seen my own biological father in over 43 years. This is his fault because he did not tell my mother at the time that he was married to another woman. This is very painful because out of my mother’s 9 children, I am the only one who has a different father from the rest of my half siblings. Anytime that another person tells a person who is in this situation to “get over it.” It only causes a lot of damage to the person’s psyche. It affects them to the point that; a person who is experiencing this usually goes through a great deal of depression. This is simply because a person would like to see their absent parent before they die.

As far as the nuclear family is concerned, there are times when a person would choose not to have any children. This is simply because of financial hardships as well as other forms of hardships that tend to adversely affect the person who is going through this experience. This is not very easy to deal with because most parents, who are living right now, usually refuse to talk about their experiences as well as the past. Children who are growing up in the year 2013 are having a great deal of hardship and pain. The pain comes from not having a father or their own biological father in their life. There are children today who are involved in blended families a whole lot more than ever before. During the time that I grew up, I had my grandparents who raised me when my own mother was not able to. I relied on extended family, which composed of my grandmothers, aunt, uncle, as well as cousins. This is exactly what is really going on right now. A child has to spend most of his time with other relatives instead of his or her own siblings.

The nuclear family will not exist within the next 10 to 20 years. The reason why is because women are taking care of their own children all by themselves. Furthermore, they are also refusing to have additional children for personal reasons. I really think there is a great deal of resentment out there because of the fact that a man refuse to take care of his responsibilities. This also applies to women as well. There are women who are heavily dependent on street drugs. This causes the courts to get involved and physically remove the children from the home. There are crimes such as domestic violence, which has gone up 500% within the past 10 years. This is simply because women or men are engaging in this crime.

This particular crime disrupts the home and it also has an adverse affect on the family. When it comes to the nuclear family, it is time for both men and women to step up to the plate and take care of their own children. It is time for men and women to step up to the plate and address the issues of each child that is inside of the home. There are times when men and women refuse to attend parent child school related conferences. There are a lot of bad choices being made by both parents; especially when it comes to dealing with the family. Is It True That All Debts Are Supposed To Be Cancelled After                                          Seven Years?

        Praise The Lord Saints!!  Praise The Lord!!  How are you doing today?  Fine, I hope.  I want to ask a very important question.  Is it true that all debts are supposed to be cancelled after seven years?  I am asking this question because I have a student loan from the University of North Caroline at Charlotte.  The total of my debt right now is $13,330 dollars.  I would like for everyone to please pray for me because the interest is compounded daily. 

Next, I want to say that I was enrolled in classes on August 21, 2003.  I ended up borrowing $3,500 dollars just to enroll for a semester of classes.  However, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte withdrew me after six weeks during the Fall Semester simply because I did not have my required vaccination shots.  Even though I enjoyed the classes that I have taken, but I could not attend classes for the rest of the Fall Semester. 

        Also, I went to my doctor at Americare Healthcare Clinic, which is located in Charlotte, NC for a DNA Tracking Test.  The test results revealed to me that I have had all of my required vaccinations.  Dr. Fidelis Edosowan told me that I have had all of my shots.  I thought about enrolling into Graduate School here in Dayton, Ohio at Wright State University. 

        Moreover, the Financial Aid Advisor stated that I was not able to enroll in any classes because my student loans are currently in default.  I did not expect to pay $13,330 dollars in student loan debts 17 years later.  I am really hurt because all of my other debts got cancelled after 10 years.  I know that I also have to pay a legal judgment of $1,115 dollars to the Mecklenburg County Court System in order to receive another apartment in the Charlotte, NC Area again.

In Addition, according to a Paralegal with the Lexington Law Firm, I really do not have any-more negative items on my current credit files.  It is that, I still want to know why my student loan debt did not get cancelled after seven- years.  Obviously, this debt has been bothering me for almost 20 years not.  The company that has my student loan debt in Collections is William and Fudge Collection Agency in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

 This company stated that I have to pay over $300.00 dollars per month.  Even though I am on a fixed income right now because I receive Social Security Disability of a total of $959.00 month.  I have informed an agent at William and Fudge that I can only pay $50.00 per month.  I really do not know exactly what they are going to do, but, I have to pray that I do not end up in jail by the end of this year.

        Finally, I want to inform all of you that in the New Testament, Romans 13:8 says: Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another.  I really love this Bible verse because love is what we all need in order to survive with Jesus Christ.  I know that my credit has varied from time to time.  The debts that I have accumulated over the years are my fault.  I have received things on credit without paying for them.  Therefore, I am a welsher.  I really cannot understand how my credit score is 665.  I really do not see it.  I still have debts to pay.  I do not understand why my student loan debt did not get cancelled?  I have to do something just to pay this loan off hopefully by the end of this year.

There is no one right way to pray. 1. Adoration

The first of these seven types of prayer is adoration. Adoration is praising God for who He is. “O Lord, God of my salvation, I cry out day and night before you. Let my prayer come before you; incline your ear to my cry! For my soul is full of troubles, and my life draws near to Sheol. I am counted among those who go down to the pit; I am a man who has no strength, like one set loose among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, like those whom you remember no more, for they are cut off from your hand. You have put me in the depths of the pit, in the regions dark and deep. Your wrath lies heavy upon me, and you overwhelm me with all your waves.”

Lamentations 5:1-5

“Remember, O Lord, what has befallen us; look, and see our disgrace! Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, our homes to foreigners. We have become orphans, fatherless; our mothers are like widows. We must pay for the water we drink; the wood we get must be bought. Our pursuers are at our necks; we are weary; we are given no rest.”

Psalm 13:2-3

“How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart all the day? How long shall my enemy be exalted over me? Consider and answer me, O Lord my God; light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death…”

Application

Has your heart been heavy and burdened lately? Do you feel anxious, depressed, angry, or grieved? Know that God’s arms are a safe place, and His listening ear is there for you. How can you tailor these laments to fit your current situation, feelings, and needs?

3. Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is the next type of prayer. Like adoration, thanksgiving is praising God for what He has done. God has done so much for each of us, not the least of which was sending Christ to save us from our sins. When praying, think of God’s actions in your life and recognize Him for that by giving thanks. This will also help you build an attitude of gratitude in your daily life. Check out these three prayers from the Bible for examples of thanksgiving.

Daniel 2:20-23

“Daniel answered and said: ‘Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, to whom belong wisdom and might. He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding; he reveals deep and hidden things; he knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with him. To you, O God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise, for you have given me wisdom and might, and have now made known to me what we asked of you, for you have made known to us the king’s matter.’”

Luke 1:46-55

“And Mary said, ‘My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate; he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever.’”

1 Samuel 2:1–10

“And Hannah prayed and said, ‘My heart exults in the Lord; my horn is exalted in the Lord. My mouth derides my enemies, because I rejoice in your salvation. There is none holy like the Lord: for there is none besides you; there is no rock like our God. Talk no more so very proudly, let not arrogance come from your mouth; for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed. The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble bind on strength. Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread, but those who were hungry have ceased to hunger. The barren has borne seven, but she who has many children is forlorn. The Lord kills and brings to life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up. The Lord makes poor and makes rich; he brings low and he exalts. He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honor. For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s, and on them he has set the world. He will guard the feet of his faithful ones, but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness, for not by might shall a man prevail. The adversaries of the Lord shall be broken to pieces; against them he will thunder in heaven. The Lord will judge the ends of the earth; he will give strength to his king and exalt the horn of his anointed.’”

Application

When you look back on your day for all the things – big and small – that God has done, you may be surprised! There are so many things that He does that we are unaware of. Sometimes the things we are thankful for create an overwhelming list! It may be helpful to write down your list of things you are grateful for in a journal or try this fun activity: 

Take a jar, box, or other container and decorate it any way you would like. Next, write down on scraps of paper things you are thankful for, fold them up, and add to the jar. Be sure to add one thing a day, minimum. Then, when you are praying, pull out a few paper scraps and thank God for those things. Let Him know you see and appreciate His hand moving in your life.

4. Petition

The fourth type of prayer is petition. Petition is what many people imagine when they think about prayer. It means asking God for something, whether for yourself or someone else. And God certainly wants us to do this! Philippians 4:6 tells us to let our requests be known to God. But prayer is not just about asking God to do things for us – it’s just one of the many ways that He wants us to communicate with Him. Check out these three prayers from the Bible for examples of petition.

Ephesians 3:14-21

“For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”

1 Timothy 2:1-4

“First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”

Genesis 18:22-32

“Then Abraham drew near and said, ‘Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city. Will you then sweep away the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous who are in it? Far be it from you to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?’ And the Lord said, ‘If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake.’ Abraham answered and said, ‘Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes. Suppose five of the fifty righteous are lacking. Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five?’ And he said, ‘I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.’ Again he spoke to him and said, ‘Suppose forty are found there.’ He answered, ‘For the sake of forty I will not do it.’ Then he said, ‘Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak. Suppose thirty are found there.’ He answered, ‘I will not do it, if I find thirty there.’ He said, ‘Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord. Suppose twenty are found there.’ He answered, ‘For the sake of twenty I will not destroy it.’ Then he said, ‘Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak again but this once. Suppose ten are found there.’ He answered, ‘For the sake of ten I will not destroy it.’

Application

In Mark 10:51, Jesus asked a blind man, “What do you want me to do for you?” God knows our every need and the desire of our hearts, yet He wants us to have a conversation with Him and ask Him for those needs. What needs and desires do you have that you can ask Him for today? Come to Him with a thankful heart, and write down what you’ve asked Him for after you’ve prayed. When you receive an answer to that prayer (whether it is yes, no, or wait), write it down. You’ll be amazed when you look back at how Jesus comes alongside you and answers you.

5. Deliverance

The next prayer type is deliverance. Prayers of deliverance are similar to prayers of petition. They are requests made to God to save us or others from challenging or dangerous situations. But they also acknowledge that we can do nothing apart from God and that He has the power to save. These prayers are all over the Bible – especially in King David’s Psalms. Check out these three prayers from the Bible for examples of prayers for deliverance.

Psalm 3

“O Lord, how many are my foes! Many are rising against me; many are saying of my soul, ‘There is no salvation for him in God.’ But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head. I cried aloud to the Lord, and he answered me from his holy hill. I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the Lord sustained me. I will not be afraid of many thousands of people who have set themselves against me all around. Arise, O Lord! Save me, O my God! For you strike all my enemies on the cheek; you break the teeth of the wicked. Salvation belongs to the Lord; your blessing be on your people!”

Luke 22:39-42

“And [Jesus] came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. And when he came to the place, he said to them, ‘Pray that you may not enter into temptation.’ And he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, saying, ‘Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.’”

Jonah 2

“Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish, saying, ‘I called out to the Lord, out of my distress, and he answered me; out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and you heard my voice. For you cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the flood surrounded me; all your waves and your billows passed over me. Then I said, ‘I am driven away from your sight; yet I shall again look upon your holy temple.’ The waters closed in over me to take my life; the deep surrounded me; weeds were wrapped about my head at the roots of the mountains. I went down to the land whose bars closed upon me forever; yet you brought up my life from the pit, O Lord my God. When my life was fainting away, remembered the Lord, and my prayer came to you, into your holy temple. Those who pay regard to vain idols forsake their hope of steadfast love. But I with the voice of thanksgiving will sacrifice to you; what I have vowed I will pay. Salvation belongs to the Lord!’ And the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out upon the dry land.”

Application

Think back to a time when you were in a dangerous or difficult situation and needed help. Did you cry out to God for help? How did He answer? Are you in a situation now that feels hopeless unless He intervenes? Are there things in your life from which you need to find freedom? Struggles you have from which you need deliverance? Ask Him for what you need and set it before His feet. Trust that He will help you and ask Him to speak to you.

6. Contrition

The sixth type of prayer is contrition. Contrition is the feeling of remorse and the desire to repent of sin. You are probably familiar with prayers like this, which ask God for forgiveness for things we have done. They are essential prayers that allow us to confess our wrongdoing and reconnect with our forgiving Heavenly Father. Psalm 51 tells us that when we mess up, God desires “a broken and contrite heart” from us. Check out these three prayers from the Bible for examples of prayers of contrition or asking for forgiveness. 

Psalm 51:1-4

“Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.”

Luke 18:9-14

“[Jesus] also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: ‘Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’ But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Psalm 32:1-5

“Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit. For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,’ and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.”

Application

It’s often difficult to admit that we have made mistakes or sinned. God already knows every nuance of you, your day, and what you have thought or done. When you bring those things to Him, He offers you forgiveness and freedom from them. Take a few moments to think through your day and week. Are there things for which you need to ask forgiveness? Are there unresolved things from your past that you want God to forgive?

7. Guidance

The last of the types of prayer that we will cover are prayers for guidance. Similar to prayers for deliverance, these conversations with God allow us to acknowledge God’s sovereignty. We can express that He knows best and that we trust him to direct our lives when we ask Him for guidance. Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us that we should not lean on our own understanding, but instead trust in the Lord with all our heart. Check out these three prayers from the Bible for examples of prayers for guidance.

1 Kings 3:4-9

“And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for that was the great high place. Solomon used to offer a thousand burnt offerings on that altar. At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night, and God said, ‘Ask what I shall give you.’ And Solomon said, ‘You have shown great and steadfast love to your servant David my father, because he walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart toward you. And you have kept for him this great and steadfast love and have given him a son to sit on his throne this day. And now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of David my father, although I am but a little child. I do not know how to go out or come in. And your servant is in the midst of your people whom you have chosen, a great people, too many to be numbered or counted for multitude. Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?’”

Psalm 25:4-5

“Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long.”

Jeremiah 10:23-24

“I know, O Lord, that the way of man is not in himself, that it is not in man who walks to direct his steps. Correct me, O Lord, but in justice; not in your anger, lest you bring me to nothing.”

Application

God sent His Holy Spirit to live in your heart when you asked Jesus into your life. He promises that if we ask for wisdom and guidance, He will give it generously (James 1:5). Where do you need guidance in your life today? Ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you, give you the knowledge and wisdom you need, and provide you with direction. You can create a fun visual of the directions God gives you by creating a map. Start where you are and draw a path where His Spirit leads you as He guides you. Drawing a map can be a fun way to detail the journey and a way to look back on how He navigates you through life’s twists and turns.

The Lord’s Prayer

Remember, a strong prayer life will regularly incorporate these seven different types of prayer in your conversations with God. For an example of this, look no further than Jesus’ prayer in Luke 11:1-4, commonly referred to as the Lord’s Prayer:

“Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.’ And he said to them, ‘When you pray, say: ‘Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.’”

Hope for Broken Lives

You and I live in a world filled with brokenness. And with all the hurt and heartache and brokenness in our world, it can be easy to start wondering, “Is there any hope?”

Not unlike us, the prophet Jeremiah lived in a time of great hopelessness. God’s people had turned away from Him, and Israel and Judah were in shambles. The nation faced political upheaval, many Jews had been sent off in captivity to Babylon, and the temple had been destroyed.

Brokenness, heartache, and pain were everywhere… sound familiar?

It’s in this context we find a living illustration of hope for broken lives. Jeremiah 18:2–6 says…

“Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will let you hear my words.” So I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was working at his wheel. And the vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter’s hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to do. Then the word of the Lord came to me: “O house of Israel,  can I not do with you as this potter has done? declares the Lord. Behold, like the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel.  

Pottery is one of the oldest, most ancient arts. It remains virtually unchanged from its earliest conception. If you went to a potting shed in the Middle East or even in this country today, you would discover that pottery is made virtually the same way as it has been done year after year, generation after generation.

The potter puts a lump of clay on the wheel and turns it and shapes it to makes a vessel. This is where God sent Jeremiah. So what do we learn from his visit to the potter’s shed?

Failure is not final when you put your life in the Master’s hands.

Your failure – your brokenness – is not final!

Because just like the clay on the potter’s wheel, you are in the Master’s hands!

The divine Potter sovereignly breaks us, shapes us, and makes us into the persons that He desires us to be. God is the master workman, and He has a plan and a purpose for your life.

The Bible says you are “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14). The handprint of God is upon every life, the echo of God is in every soul. And His design… His desire is to make a beautiful vessel for His glory… will not fail. You are made to be valuable and beautiful and useful.

The clay represents you and me. Now something to know about clay is that it is colorless. It’s basically worthless in and of itself. There’s no beauty in the clay itself.

But when God gets His hands on the clay and begins to shape it and make it and even break it and bend it, He makes something beautiful out of your life.

So we have God as the potter, and you and me as the clay. And then we have the wheel. The wheel represents the daily turns and twists of life.

It is directed by the Potter, turned by the hand and the feet of God. Life is on God’s potter’s wheel. And so when we, the clay, are tossed onto the wheel of life and begin to turn, the master craftsman begins to shape us with each turn and twist. Sometimes rapidly speeding up the wheel, sometimes slowing it down to an almost interminable level.

This is not blind fate or chance. It is life directed by the divine Potter. We’re not simply going round and round in circles. According to Ephesians 2:10, if you are a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, you are “his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand.”  

And you can be certain that none of your experiences will be wasted. God is sovereign over all of the twists and turns in your life… in tragedy, in sorrow, in grief, in pain. He knows it all and He’s working in it. And when you go through one of those times in life when the pressure is on, remember the words of Romans 8:28… “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”

There’s one more thing I want you to see at the potter’s house. It’s the spoiling of a person’s life.

Look at verse 4 of Jeremiah 18… “And the vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter’s hand.” Spoiled! Marred. There is a defect that shows up! You can imagine the frown on the potter’s face. And the wheel slows, and his hands cease moving as he finds something in the clay that is resistant to the work of his hand. A stiffness, a brittleness, a defiance to the potter’s plans.

Maybe you are resisting the work of God’s hands in your life. Some secret in your life that is stiffening you. Some impurity in the clay of your life. A brittleness, a bitterness. And God cannot do what He desires to do in the design of your life to bring about the beauty and glory He has planned because you’re holding back, pushing Him away.

Thank God that’s not the end of the story. The master craftsmen has a tool up his sleeve – grace. When the vessel was spoiled, what did God do? Did he throw it away? No! He reworked it… He reshaped it into another vessel. He didn’t simply mend it. He made it anew into something beautiful and unimagined.

Second Corinthians 5:17 tells us “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” You don’t just get a fresh start. No, you get a brand-new life in Christ!

Our God, the divine Potter… is the God of the second chance and the third and the fourth and another and another. It’s that marvelous grace, that majestic, magnificent grace, that remakes you from the inside out.

So my friend, be encouraged today. The divine Potter making all things new! And He will do that in you because failure in your life never has to be final when you put your life in the Master’s hands.
