Introduction
Consensus is an approach to decision making which is highly valued in many activist groups and collectives.
Consensus is a nonviolent decision-making process that aims to create the best possible decision for the group. Pt’chang has used consensus for many years and found it a fast and effective way of coming to agreement. The input and ideas of all participants are gathered and synthesized to arrive at a final decision that is acceptable to all. The final decision is often not the first preference of each individual in the group, but it is a decision to which all consent because it is what is best for the group at the time.
Through consensus, we are not only working to achieve better solutions, but also to promote the growth of trust and respect within the group.
In essence, consensus is a qualitative, rather than quantitative, method of decision-making. With consensus people can and should work through differences and reach a mutually satisfactory position. It is possible for one person’s insights or strongly held beliefs to sway the whole group. No ideas are lost, each member’s input is valued as part of the solution.
This is an excerpt from the Pt’Chang Volunteer Manual. This handbook was produced by Pt’chang in 2003. Pt’chang was an Australian Nonviolent Community Safety Group which conducted a wide range of dynamic and creative violence-prevention, peace-building and community safety initiatives. Although no longer active Pt’chang has left a valuable legacy both through people they trained and materials such as this.
How consensus decision-making works
Reaching consensus does not assume that everyone must be in complete agreement, (a highly unlikely situation in a group of intelligent, creative individuals).
Consensus is not unanimity but the reaching of a decision to which the group consents in order for the group to act.
Consensus does not mean that everyone thinks that the decision made is necessarily the best one possible, or even that they are sure it will work. What it does mean is that in coming to that decision, no one felt that her/his position on the matter was misunderstood or that it wasn’t given a proper hearing.
Hopefully, everyone will think it is the best decision possible at the time; this often happens because, when it works, collective intelligence often comes up with better solutions than could individuals.
Consensus sometimes takes more time and skill, but utilises lots of resources before a decision is made, creates commitment to the decision and often facilitates a unique and creative decision.
It gives everyone some experience with new processes of interaction and conflict resolution, which is basic but important skill-building.
For consensus to be a positive experience, it is best if the group has:
1) common values;
2) some skill in group process and conflict resolution, or a commitment to let these be facilitated;
3) commitment and responsibility to the group by its members; and
4) sufficient time for everyone to participate in the process.
Forming a consensus proposal
During a discussion a proposal for resolution is put forward. It is amended and modified through more discussion, or withdrawn if it seems to be a dead end. During this discussion period it is important to articulate differences clearly. It is the responsibility of those who are having trouble with a proposal to put forth alternative suggestions.
The fundamental right of consensus is for all people to be able to express themselves in their own words and of their own will.
The fundamental responsibility of consensus is to assure others of their right to speak and be heard. Coercion and trade-offs are replaced with creative alternatives, and compromise with synthesis.
When a proposal seems to be well understood by everyone, and there are no new changes asked for, the facilitator(s) can ask if there are any objections to it. If there are no objections, there can be a call for consensus.
If there are still no objections, then after a moment of silence you have your decision. Once consensus does appear to have been reached, it really helps to have someone repeat the decision to the group so everyone is clear on what has been decided.
Difficulties in reaching consensus
If a decision has been reached, or is on the verge of being reached that you cannot support, there are several ways to express your objections:
- Non-support (“I don’t see the need for this, but I’ll go along.”)
- Reservations (“I think this may be a mistake but I can live with it.”)
- Standing aside (“I personally can’t do this, but I won’t stop others from doing it.”)
- Blocking (“I cannot support this or allow the group to support this.”)
If a final decision violates someone’s fundamental moral or ethical values they are obligated to block consensus.
Obviously, if many people express non-support or reservations or stand aside or leave the group, it may not be a viable decision even if no one directly blocks it. This is what is known as a “lukewarm” consensus. The more important the decision, the more important it is to have a strong level of consensus.
If consensus is blocked and no new consensus can be reached, the group stays with whatever the previous decision was on the subject, or does nothing if that is applicable. Major philosophical or moral questions that will come up will have to be worked through as soon as possible.
Roles in a consensus meeting
There are several roles which, if filled, can help consensus decision-making run smoothly.
The facilitator aids the group in defining decisions that need to be made, helps them through the stages of reaching an agreement, keeps the meeting moving, focuses discussion to the point at hand, makes sure everyone has the opportunity to participate, and formulates and tests to see if consensus has been reached.
Facilitators help to direct the process of the meeting, not its content. They never make decisions for the group.
If a facilitator feels too emotionally involved in an issue or discussion and cannot remain neutral in behaviour, if not in attitude, then s/he should ask someone to take over the task of facilitation for that agenda item.
A minute-taker can take notes on the meeting, especially of decisions made and means of implementation and a time-keeper keeps things going on schedule so that each agenda item can be covered in the time allotted for it (if discussion runs over the time for an item, the group may or may not decide to contract for more time to finish up).
Even though individuals take on these roles, all participants in a meeting should be aware of and involved in the issues, process, and feelings of the group, and should share their individual expertise in helping the group run smoothly and reach a decision.
Pt’chang is committed to creating an empowering and safe decision- making environment and challenging those behaviours that exclude or dominate others.
Here are some specific ways we can be responsible to others and ourselves in groups:
- Not interrupting people who are speaking. We can even leave space after each speaker, counting to five before speaking.
- Becoming a good listener. Good listening is as important as good speaking. It’s important not to withdraw when not speaking; good listening is active participation.
- Getting and giving support. We can help each other be aware of and interrupt patterns of domination, as well as affirm each other as we move away from those ways. It is important that men support and challenge each other, rather than asking women to do so. This will also allow women more space to break out of their own conditioned role of looking after men’s needs while ignoring their own.
- Not giving answers and solutions. We can give our opinions in a manner which says we believe our ideas to be valuable, but no more important than others’ ideas.
- Relaxing. The group will do fine without our anxiety attacks.
- Not speaking on every subject. We need not share every idea we have, at least not with the whole group.
- Not putting others down. We need to check ourselves when we’re about to subtly attack or ‘one-up’ another. We can ask ourselves, ‘Why am I doing this? What am I feeling? What do I need?”.

The concept of death, afterlife, or heaven is not welcome by all as most people want to continue living on Earth for eternity. So, the interpretation of the verse, “Man is like to vanity: his days are as a shadow that passeth away”, can be that it is unfair and cruel of God to allow people to die an untimely death, especially when they have unfulfilled dreams or desires. When a person is asked what they fear the most, a lot of them or likely to say death. Hence, for people who believe that it is God who times birth and death, it might seem a little unreasonable and cruel of Him to cause early death.
Interpretation #3 Human’s vain life causes quicker death
The meaning of the verse, “Man is like to vanity: his days are as a shadow that passeth away”, can be perceived as two parts of a sentence. So, the interpretation of the phrase, ‘his days are as a shadow that passeth away,” means that death is simple and sudden, but it might bring people closer to God.

When God created humans, he also created death. He didn’t intend for human beings to be immortal. He meant for them to be born and also to die. In the NASB version, the verse is as follows – Man is like the breath; His days are like a passing shadow. This version uses similies in both phrases.
metaphor – Psalm 144:4 also has a metaphor in the second part of the verse. For example, ‘his days are as a shadow that passeth away’. The entire verse is also an extended metaphor for ‘death’.
personification – Here, the ‘shadow’ is personified as if the shadow can pass through a place or a time like humans, it also means that the shadow can die like a living creature.
assonance – There is also a rich use of assonance in Psalm 144:4. For example, the sound /a/ in ‘as a shadow that passeth’.
theme – While the entire chapter’s theme is ‘greatness of God’, Psalm 144:4 displays the theme of resolution and loss.

Man is like a breath!!
Man is like a breath. His life is like a passing shadow. It gives me the indication that God is not finish with us yet. He is giving all of a chance to repent of our sins. This is coming out of the Bible in Psalms 144:4. I know that this is very serious. It also gives me a chance to acknowledge God and His Son Jesus Christ as my personal savior. Jesus Christ is my personal Savior, and God is my Father. I have a second chance to redeem myself from things that I have done was distasteful in my personal life. I am happy that I have given myself to Him. The Lord God is very good. I am really happy to share my experience, strength, and hope with everyone. Life itself is like a vapor according to James the 4th Chapter.
Jesus, you have died for me. I repent and I turn toward you. I receive you today. Make me what you want me to be. Thank You for loving me. I am ready to begin my new way of living. God, grant me the serenity to accept the things that I cannot change. Prayers! Please keep me in perfect peace!! May The Lord God Be with you spiritually and keep you in His hands. I am truly grateful that God accepts me for who I am as a person. The Lord God is perfect!! I am willing to share the Gospel with everyone that I come in contact with. My life is only a breath because it is His Spirit that dwells with me. The air that I breathe does not belong to me. I realize that my life has been misunderstood. I know that I am only human flesh. I am a Christian.
I am a Christ Like Person. I am the type of person who is honest, truthful, sincere, pleasant to be around, and very kind. I am letting my light shine each day of my life. I have a peace, joy, empathy, and truth about myself. The Lord God knew me when I was inside of my mother’s womb. According to Jeremiah 1:5 says before I formed you inside of the womb, I knew you. Before you were born, I sanctified you and ordained you as a Prophet to the Nations. God knows everything!! God knew all of us long before we were born inside of our mother’s womb.
I am very happy to be a Child of The Most High God. At The Name of Jesus, every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord over All. We should pray to want to know God. How can you know God? Please have an experience with Him right now. We must have an intimate relationship with Him right now. We need to know Him. I am really sure that God is in charge of my life. I am happy to say that I am blessed when good things happen in my life.
