2 Corinthians 1:3-7 – The God of All Comfort

2 Corinthians 1:3-7 – Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. 5 For as we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too.[a] 6 If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; and if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which you experience when you patiently endure the same sufferings that we suffer. 7 Our hope for you is unshaken, for we know that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in our comfort.

God of all comfort

Paul describes God as the “God of all comfort.” Then he expounds on this thought for the rest of this passage. It is not a character quality that people often think about in relation to God. However, Paul had been thinking about it since he himself had recently experienced God’s comfort in the midst of an affliction that he faced (8-11).

However, when you think about this statement it is clearly true that God is God of all comfort. There is no real comfort apart from God. The Bible tells us that every person is a sinner and will face judgment for that sin. Apart from Christ, each person will face an eternity in hell. What comfort can be shared with a person who is on their way to hell? Or what comfort can be shared with a person who lost a relative who went to hell?

There is none. If a person is dying with cancer and doesn’t know the Lord, there is no real comfort for that person. If a person has lost a parent who doesn’t know the Lord, there is no real comfort for that person.

Now certainly in this world people would try to offer comfort to others. A person loses his job. “Don’t worry, you will find another one.” Someone gets a bad case of the flue, “It will pass.” But this is only temporal comfort. It doesn’t address a person’s real issues.

Think of it in this way. If a mother with cancer stubs her toe is it comforting to tell her that her stubbed toe will feel better soon? This isn’t her real problem.

So some also try to hide the facts. In some countries, when elderly people get cancer or other terminal illnesses their family will often cover it up and lie to them that “everything will be OK.” Again, it is temporal comfort. But it isn’t real. It’s a lie. It’s a facade. That illusion of comfort will at some point be taken away.

In a similar way, many live in “ignorant bliss” about their spiritual destiny. They try to comfort themselves by ignoring the spiritual reality and repeating to themselves over and over, “everything will be OK.” But it won’t be OK.

There is no comfort for a person who is still living in sin. Often times when people die others will say “RIP.” Rest in Peace. And they will say, “at least he is not in pain anymore.” But you can’t say this about an unbeliever. They are not resting in peace. There is no comfort for them. And there is no comfort for their family.
Apart from God, nothing will be OK. There is no real and lasting comfort apart from what God can give. And it is given only to those who experience salvation and have a relationship with Him.

If a person comes to God for comfort, he will receive it.

Matthew 5:4 – Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

If you mourn over sin, you will receive comfort.

God promises forgiveness of sins. There will be a final comfort for believers when every tear is washed away, every pain gone, every sadness turned to joy, and every sin confirmed to be paid for as we are made perfect forever in God’s presence. But there is also a comfort now to those who mourn for sin.

God does not hold your sin against you. When you confess, He removes it as far as the East is from the West. There is comfort in the promise of forgiveness.

If a loved one passes away who is saved, we don’t grieve as those who have no hope. Knowing that person is in heaven with Christ is a comfort (1 Thessalonians 4:13).

God gives real comfort to those who repent of their sin. And though they may face temporary afflictions, these pale in comparison to the eternal blessings in store for them.

If you are facing trials or pain today and you are in God’s kingdom already, be comforted by this verse. And use it to comfort others.

Reflect: Share various ways God comforts believers.

Who comforts us in our affliction –

Here are some of the ways He comforts us in affliction:

  • He promises that our pain and tears will be wiped away.
  • He promises that our sins are forgiven if we confess.
  • He promises that He will cause everything to work together for good if we love Him.
  • He promises that He will never leave us or forsake it.
  • He promises that He will strengthen us to be overwhelming conquerors.

So that we comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort we have received –

Paul says explicitly that one reason God comforts us is so that we can comfort others. It is difficult to pass on something you don’t have and have never experienced. While it is not impossible for a single person to teach on marriage (by expounding on God’s Word), it is more difficult than if that person has been married and has been able to apply firsthand the lessons in the Bible on marriage.

It is also easier for a person who has experience applying biblical principles to raising children to teach others how to do the same.

One common sentence people use to comfort others is, “I know how you feel.” And the normal response is , “You don’t know how I feel!” But when you have received comfort in God’s promises, answered prayer, intimate friendship, and Spirit giving power to overcome, you will have something real and vibrant to share with others who have faced similar afflictions to you. You can honestly tell them, “When I faced the biggest trial of my life, this is how God comforted me.”

Reflect: Think about and thank Him for specific ways He has comforted you in the midst of affliction or difficulty.

Through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too

Throughout the Bible, we learn that God expects us to pass on what we have received. The man who was possessed by a legion of demons was saved and the demons were cast out. He was commanded to go and tell others what God had done for Him (Mark 5).

As believers, we should speak in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs (Ephesians 5:19). We are to actively seek to encourage each other by sharing testimonies and passing on what we learn from Scripture. And to unbelievers, we share the gospel.

In this verse, we are reminded to comfort other believers. We have to be sensitive and observant. When we see those hurting, we should take initiative to reach out. It could start as simply as making a friend and listening. And when someone tells us of a difficult thing in their life, then you can stop right there and say, “Let me pray for you.” Do it right away.

Application: Consider how to put in practice what you have learned from this passage about comfort. How can you comfort other believers? Is there a specific person who is in the middle of a trial whom you can reach out to? How can you grow in compassion toward those around you? The very best comfort you can ever offer is to share the gospel of Jesus, who offers forgiveness of sins and eternal life. So go deeper than the surface and share the good news. Bring people to the God of all comfort!

The Issues of Life

What are the Issues of Life?

What are the issues of life? A definition of something like this consists of trials and tribulations that we face each day.  According to Proverbs 4:23 it says; above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flow from it.  This means that we must watch what we say, think, and do.  Our brain and heart is intertwined.  It obviously works hand in hand.  What the Bible says is that the mind itself controls everything.  The heart is an organ that sustains life of an individual.  It is the mind that controls the heart and everything else.  Scientifically speaking, what the brain process as information is based on what we see, smells, touch, taste, and hear.  It also has a whole lot to do with the information that is acquitted from our environment.  A definition of an environment is one own surroundings.  The issues of life are based on how we are able to have the ability to adapt and cope with conditions.

When we speak about conditions it states that it can be anything based on behavior.  A condition is a state of mind.  Our state of mind each day of the week is based upon how we feel as individuals each day.  Issues of life consist of how well we deal with other people who are inside of our environment.  I know for me when it comes to maintaining a certain state of mind each day has a lot to do with how I feel each day.  Issues of life can be traumatic in nature.  It can be something that happens in our life such as natural disaster, death, loss of employment, and marriage as an example.

Matthew 15:18-19 says: But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them.  For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, and slander.  This means that we must watch what we say; do think because it can lead to consequences.  Anything that is defiled is expelled from the body and rejected.  According to Matthew 12:36-37 states; But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word that is spoken.  For by your words you will be acquitted and by your words, you will be condemned.  This is very serious because anything that is spoken out of the mouth as speech goes directly into your Book of Life.  Your book of life is based on the day that you were redeemed, saved, sanctified and filled with the Holy Ghost.

However, we all must give account of ourselves in the Day of Judgment.  This is still a review of your actions, thoughts, and works for God.  The issues of life are very serious.  Issues of life have a lot to do with the ability of each person to cope inside of their own environment; in spite of what is going on in their personal life.  Proverbs 23:19 say; understand my son, and be wise, and set your heart on the right path.  We all must focus all of our attention on God.  Jesus Christ is the reason for the season!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  When the Bible talks about the heart it consists of our emotions, motivation, and inner being.  It is very important that we stay solid and strong in our convictions and standards.  We have to stick to our values!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Answers.com has a better interpretation and history of the heart. It reveals that in  both Hebrew and Greek culture, the heart was thought of more as a symbol of ultimate purpose and motivation. Emotional concepts, like affection, were associated more with gastrointestinal organs. Hebrew symbolism used the body as an analogy of the whole person. The strength of a person was their outward behavior – what they do WITH their body. The conscious mind, in that culture did not as easily separate thought, emotion and volition like we do. They recognized the conscious mind was engaged in thoughts, feelings and intentions but they tended to see these as different facets of the conscious mind. The heart is the organ more at the core of the body. That culture used the heart as a symbol of the inner man, the deepest thoughts, the deepest feelings, the deepest intentions. So deep at times they were incomprehensible, and in some ways, unknowable and difficult to observe – known only by God.

So the heart is, in that language, a word that represents the core or ultimate intention, ultimate value, ultimate motivation. These were also analogous to concentric circles. The inner man is center-most. This is the heart. Surrounding the heart is a larger circle called the mind. The mind included all conscience thoughts, decisions, and feelings. The outermost circle was the body where all the behavior took place. Spirituality starts at the center and works it way out, hence the admonishment to love God with all your heart (the very core of your being), all your mind (the most accessible part of your conscious life) and all your strength (the behavior that flows from the heart and mind).

An Educated Mind #2

An Educated Mind An educated mind is a mind that is very powerful. An educated mind is one that is flourishing. This is a mind that hungers for knowledge each day. This is also a mind that never stops learning new things. This is a mind that one is sometimes envious of each day. There are those who envy those who are constantly hungry for this knowledge. An educated mind decides what is right and what is wrong as far as the things that are done in life. An educated mind is a brain that is always eager to receive knowledge from the stimuli that the earth provides.

Positive or negative stimuli has a lot to do with energies that one receives in front of it. Sometimes this consists of universal emotions that one receives from being around others. This is a mind that has grown over time. It is like a seed that is grown inside of the ground. This seed itself is a seed that growns into a plant that nourishes itself from the waters that the earth provides. I am not saying that I am a scientist, but I do know this much about life. This is infact that an educated mind is one that is desperate for knowledge.

This information is derived from what we receive from others. The information that pertains to language, understanding, viewpoints, perspectives, values and norms that are familiar and unfamiliar to me as well as others. I want to say that I am a social animal which is called a human being according to Charles Darwin. This person is an evolutionist. There are so many individuals who are evolutionist here on earth that it surprises me. There is a book called the Human Zoo. This book is written by Desmond Morris. He is an evolutionist. There are people who think that man’s existence comes from primates. I am a creationist. A creationist is one who believes in the ultimate creation that is based on God Himself. This means that when God created the heavens and the earth within 7 days, this means that all things was created based on the hands that God has used to created everything that we have on earth.

Afterwards, the animals as well as everthing else came into existence without a human kind to take care of the land that had existed. When God created man who is called Adam, God had drawn man on the ground and breathe into his nostrils the breath of life that is essential for his existence. This means that man had became a living soul through the breathe of a Higher Power that is called God.

However, God saw that it was fit for man to have a companion. The next thing that God has done was put man into a deep sleep and removed one of man’s ribs and woman who is called Eve came into existence. The purpose for woman is to accompany man and man and woman are supposed to be a very cohesive unit. This unit is supposed to be intact, but in today’s society, this unit sometimes no longer exist. This means that men and women are doing things separately. This is due to constraints as well as issues that pertains to poor communication skills that are utilized towards each other.

Creationsim varies from person to person. This is also based on religious beliefs and traditions. Having an educated mind is one who always flourish. I mean that this is a mind that never stops learning new things. This is also a mind that is always positive in a human beings way of living. This is also an educated mind that is not afraid to pass down the torch to the younger generation. Whenever one passes its knowledge, it means that this person is passing a resource that is vital to success. If this process is disturbed in any way then it is mankind that has disrupted this process.

Remember your knowledge should be passed down to those that are interest in sharing your interest and experiences. What I mean by this is that whenever you have children, your children learn from you based upon the things that you teach them. This is called social and moral values. Your experiences that are shared with your children and even family members that are younger than you should be shared with younger people so that they can have a basis to follow in their lives.

This basis that I am talking about is learned experiences. This is based on experiences that have been collected from the knowledge that is called the educucated mind. The educated mind is an organ called the brain.
